Abstract

The role of historians with scientific criteria is not to distribute condemnations or apologies, but to explain the facts. Only after explaining can evaluative judgments be ventured. In recent times the personality of Gregorio Luperón has been the subject of controversy. The burning point turned to the magnitude of his performance in the Restoration war, whether he was the hero of the fight against the Annexation to Spain or, failing that, was the figure of Gaspar Polanco.
