The Dominican historiography abundantly registers the thesis that the Dominican people have no aptitude for democratic life. The liberal thought of the 19th century, for example, is in this sense representative. Bonó estimated that the Dominican society was organized for despotism; therefore, we will have a bad feeling for rebellions and more rebellions, dictatorships and more dictatorships. He estimated that the dictatorship was "the universal remedy to which peoples and governments have appealed in the supreme hours of their existence. Ours do not lend themselves to another. It should be added that the leading classes have lost their prestige for the republican form, and the others have not yet been able to acquire the qualities that definitively affirm the one that belongs to them.
