At the end of the Restoration War in 1865, the need to consolidate and strengthen the ideals of freedom and independence of the Dominican Nation arose. This was in the face of the drive of the conservative and annexationist sectors to hand over the Republic to a foreign power; a project that was attempted to consolidate during the administration of the "Six Years of Baez" (1868-1874), who reached agreements with President Grant for the annexation of the Republic or the lease of Samaná. This essay has as a guiding thread the analysis of nationalism, Hispanism, anti-Haitianism and anti-Americanism in the writings of José Gabriel García.
