Abstract

The following article is a historical evaluation of General Pedro Santana based on his résumé and the abundant documentation in relation to the time of the First Republic. Firstly, it is highlighted what the social function of history and the role of professional historians should be when dealing with the trajectory of a character, with the aim of placing him in his proper historical dimension. Secondly, a number of issues are stood out such as the first contributions of the General in the separatist struggle, his strange decision to leave the battlefield in Azua, his early connection with the frenchified political side, his repeated disrespect, his confrontation with the Trinitarians, his military dictatorship, his chain of executions, his aureole reached in the battle of Las Carreras, his break with Bobadilla, Jiménez and Báez, his deep-rooted anti-Haitian sentiment, his Hispanism, his betrayal to the northern revolutionaries and his efforts in favor of the annexation of the country to Spain.
