/ The hurricane of August 15, 1680

Abstract

Even though the island of Hispaniola is located within a high-risk zone in terms of the impact of cyclones, hurricanes and tropical storms, the available data on their outcome during the colonial period is rather limited, not to say null. Nevertheless, this article discusses the effects produced by the hurricane that made landfall on august 15, 1680, through the account of a very interesting spanish leaflet, which had not been recorded until today by local historiography, and has been found inside the funds of the British Library. Not only does this document portrays in a very detailed way the damage left behind by the system as it passed over the territory, but it also provides some kind of perspective in order to fully appreciate the conditions of vulnerability that hindered creole society during the century now known as Siglo de la Miseria.

Joan Ferrer, Dominican Academy of History and the Royal Matritense Academy of Heraldry

Graduated in law from PUCMM, master's degree in Genealogy and Archives from the University of Córdoba, associate researcher at the Dominican Studies Institute (CUNY), he has studied history and paleography at various foreign universities. Numerary of the Dominican Academy of Genealogy, he is a correspondent of the Dominican Academy of History and the Royal Academy of Heraldry of Matritense. He has published numerous articles in newspapers and specialized magazines and is co-author of Inquisition and Imaginary
