Retired Professor, University of Puerto Rico. Author of: The peasants of Cibao: Market economy and agrarian transformation in the Dominican Republic, 1880-1960 (1997, 2012), The imagined island: History, identity and utopia in Hispaniola (1997, 2022, among other editions), and The Silent War: Social Struggles in the Dominican Rural Area (2004, 2011). In 2017, his book “Many Mexicos”: Historical Imaginaries about Mexico in the United States (2016) won the “Leopoldo Zea” American Thought Award, conferred by the Pan-American Institute of Geography and History. He is a Foreign Corresponding Member of the Dominican Academy of History and the Academy of Sciences.
