The new Dominican poetry began to take shape after Trujillo's death, or at least in the immediate following period, but it owes its vital impulse to the 1965 revolution. In many ways, the emerging crop of authors was a direct product, potential and emotionally resulting from the April revolution. In practice, literary activity was for a long time influenced, and almost determined, by the great war event, even though its theme was not necessarily warmongering. Reasons for the political climate extended its existence to almost the entire reign of Balaguer, including, of course, the interregnum of the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD).
